This is part 1 of a series I’ll be doing this week on How to Make Homemade Cheap Easy Healthy alternatives to a lot of common (and unhealthy and expensive!) products we use in our homes. These are a few of my favorite “recipes” for cleaners.
All Purpose Cleaner
- 2 cups vinegar
- 2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons Dawn Dish Soap
- 5 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional, but check back later this week for recipes for making your own essential oils!)
Add the vinegar and water to a spray bottle. Add the dawn dish soap and optional essential oil. Shake bottle to mix.
Toilet Cleaner
- Let white vinegar sit for 10 minutes in the bowl. Flush
- Sprinkle baking soda around the inside of the toilet bowl
- Clean with a toilet brush
Glass Cleaner
- Mix rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle (not for use near open flames)
Tub and Tile Cleaner
- Mix 1 2/3 cup baking soda with 1/2 a cup liquid Dawn
- Add 1/2 cup water
- Slowly add 2 tablespoons vinegar (don’t add too quickly or it will react with the baking soda
This is best to make in a small plastic or glass container as it is too think for a spray bottle. Use a cloth (or paper towel) to apply to the tub or tile. Let sit for a minute or so, then rub and scrub (not too much scrubbing is required unless your tub/ tile is really dirty
Stovetop Cleaner
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup water
- Mix in a small plastic container and apply with cloth or paper towel.
Floor Cleaner
- 1 Part Vinegar & Equal Parts Hot Water
- Add 1/2 cup strong tea to make floors shine (Optional)
Oven Cleaner
- Pour baking soda immediately on any spills. Allow to sit. Wipe clean with a wet cloth
Drain Cleaner
- Pour 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 baking soda down drain
- Allow to “fizzle”
- If you have a disposal, you can also put 1/2 a lemon and some ice cubes down the disposal to sharpen the blades and make the disposal smell nice
Microwave De-Greaser
- Slice a lemon paper thin and add to a bowl of water
- Add a few teaspoons of baking soda to water if microwave is very dirty (Optional)
- Put in microwave uncovered and run microwave for about five minutes on medium power level
- Wipe out grease, and your microwave will smell delicious
