How To Make Your Own Essential Oils

I like to scent my homemade cleaning products with my own homemade essential oils. Essential oils can get expensive if you purchase them in store, but they are relatively easy to make with a few herbs from your garden.
- Take a “carrier oil” (olive oil, sesame oil, canola oil, and safflower oil all work wonderfully as carrier oils)
- Place the carrier oil in a jar & add plant material (you can use lavender buds, rosemary, mint, or lemon & orange peel… pretty much any plant or natural material you like the scent of. The beds and stalks are best) You can also grind the buds or herbs first and moisten with rubbing alcohol to bring out the scent more
- Cover tightly and leave for 48 hours in a sunny window, shaking every 12 hours (if its cold out, once a day you can put the jar in a saucepan of water & slowly heat the water until it becomes warm to the touch then keep it at this temperature for 10 minutes & remove the jar) Ensure that the buds are entirely below the surface of the oil so they dont’ grow mold. You can weigh them down if necessary
- Lay muslin or cheesecloth over the bowl and strain the oils. Gather up the muslin & squeeze out the scented oil into a small container.
- Remove the water & sediment layer and then put the oil back in the jar and add new plant material. Repeat the process
- Continue until you achieve the desired aroma. After you have achieved the scent you like, store oil in a dark glass bottle
- The oil will keep for approximately 6-12 months.
