Don’t Go At It Alone

In many ways, I am lucky, because my DF is completely on the same page as I am about getting out of debt. We both want to pay down our loans aggressively, and we are both willing to make the sacrifices necessary to do so. However, even if you don’t have a supportive partner or if you aren’t married, it is much easier (and more fun) to accomplish your debt repayment or savings or other financial goals with someone else. The best thing would be to share your goals with a close friend or family member you see on a regular basis, someone who can sort of keep you accountable. You know, the person who fills in for the little voice in your head that says “Don’t buy that sweater!” when the little voice is on vacation.
If you aren’t comfortable sharing your financial desires with people that you interact with in real life, you can do so online. Blogging is a great way to keep yourself accountable- I know that since I put my little progress bars and monthly budgets up on this site, I’ve been a little more careful about letting any of those spending columns get out of hand. If you aren’t a writer, there are online debt reduction groups like The Women In Red where you can go for support and encouragement and sharing. Or, if you subscribe to his philosophy, find some fellow Dave Ramsey followers in your area by attending one of his classes and sessions.
It can be hard to live differently from those around you, who are trying to keep up with the Jones’. It can be hard to deprive yourself in order to accomplish your financial goals, if you feel like you are the only one doing so. Having a group, or even one, like minded people who know about your plan and support you is one surefire way of making sure you accomplish your desires.
