The cold weather is approaching here. We’re starting to ready ourselves for a long cold winter, lol. The good thing about winter is that I don’t like to drive in it, so we save a lot of gas money. I also don’t like to go out in it, so if we had entertainment expenses (which we now do not) we’d save a lot of money on those. But, aside from the stay-inside-and-never-leave plan, here are 5 more Frugal Fall Tips:
1. Make sure your house is weather-proofed so heat isn’t escaping. Check weather stripping, window caulking, etc. Heat is going to be expensive enough this winter, without adding to your costs by heating the whole outside world
2. Check your car for winter as well. Do you have a scraper and those things to clean off your windshield? If you don’t, buy them now before the first rush at winter storm time (this, of course, only applies to those who live in cold-weather climates!)
3. Take advantage of Fall Food. Go pick some apples, make a few pies and freeze them. Or make a batch of homemade apple sauce like I did today. Its so easy… I mixed 6 cups of Macintosh Apples, 6 cups Cortland Apples, 1 cup white sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1 teaspoon nutmeg and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. YUM! Apple sauce and pies both freeze well and if you pick your own apples it is cheap cheap (and a fun family activity on a fall day)
4. Stock up on Turkeys that are free/cheap around Thanksgiving. Last year I got 2 free turkeys from Albertsons. I chopped them up into usable pieces and froze them. The chopping wasn’t that much fun, but it was 40 pounds of free meat into the freezer. I had turkey soups, turkey tacos, turkey casseroles, etc.
5. Rake leaves and jump in them! Its a great free fun activity for kids, or for adults that want to feel like a kid!
